    Gary Gygax R.I.P
Today Gary Gygax, co creator of Dungeons and Dragons and one of the leading lights behind modern day gaming passed away in his home aged 69. He had been suffering various health problems and they sadly finally got better of the bearded godfather of gaming.

Michael is a sad geek :(

    I...Live...AGAIN!
    One moment

*Goes and gets Army of Darkness and puts it on before continuing typing*

Where in the name of sweet baby Cthulhu is my Evil Dead boxed set? I guess Ill have to settle for the first one with commentary :( Ah well.

Its that time again ladies and gentlethings, for me to remember I actually have a livejournal and do a year-end roundup. Yes I realise its coming up to a week since new year but ive been in a grumpy mood the past week or so and havent felt motivated enough to do this. So there.

The following is split into a few ''of the year'' categories followed by things that have occured this year Im happy and or unhappy with, so in the words of the fat italian plumber ''lets a' go!''.

    Band of the Year

Without a doubt its Within Temptation. They were amazing when I first saw them at Download, an impression that was confirmed a few months back when I went to see them at the Manchester Academy with Emma and Kittan. They are talented, they know how to work an audience, they have a fantastic stage presence, and they are not arrogant. Both times Ive seen them they have always ended the set looking exhausted but jubilant and more than a little overawed by the crowds reaction to their performances. You can tell they enjoy what they do and that they dont quite believe how much people like them.

I hope they keep that attitude of playing for the audience rather than for money or fame, it'll be a nice change really.

Honourable Mentions : Iron Maiden, Dragonforce, Alice Cooper

    Book of the Year

Hmmm, Im going to have to go with Innocent Mage by Karen Miller, not necessarily the best book ive read this year but considering that its a first attempt at a fantasy novel by a new author it is damn good. Its also a change from a lot of modern fantasy in that instead of focusing on a series of events, a quest or some epic struggle its instead focused around the personal lives (admittedly exceptional in some cases lives, but lives nonetheless) of a small group of people who all grow and mature in various ways over the course of the story. The book also throws some wonderful little pieces of character insight at the reader as well which made me smile or ''ahhh'' in appreciation more than once. Strongly reccomended.

Honourable Mentions : Risen Empire, Elric of Melnibone, The latest Feist books, Watchmen

    Film of the Year

A tough one, there havent been many films this year that Ive really rated. 300 was entertaining in a manly testosterone filled way as was Beowulf, but there have been some really poor films released too, 30 Days of Night and Spiderman 3 to name but two. So instead this years winner is a film I saw for the first time this year but was actually released some time ago, Dagon. If you get the chance to watch this lovecraftian piece of cinema do so, you wont be disappointed :) well you might be, but then Cthulhu will eat your soul.

    Game of the Year (Board)

Tannhauser, an easy to learn and quick to play boardgame pitting two small teams of soldiers and heroes against each other in a world where the first world war still rages and the nobility of the german reich consort with terrible extraplanar powers while the allies experiment with advanced Command and Conquer-esque technology.

You can see why I like this game already, nazis, demons, zombies and chainguns. Whats not to love? The prepainted models are good, the rules are pretty simple but with enough complexity to stay interesting and theres plenty of room for addons. I personally hope this line lasts for quite some time.

    Honorable Mentions : Warmachine

    Game of the Year (Computer)

Graphically beautiful, deep as the Elder Scrolls games tend to be, an interesting storyline, entertaining combat, and characters voiced by Patrick Stuart and Sean Bean. Im not a huge fan of the autolevelling foes as I believe the feeling of accomplishment from achieving high levels and easily defeating creatures you previously struggled with suffers somewhat and the spell crafting system could use more work to make the spells graphically different but other than that theres very little to complain about.

That and radiant AI is hilarious.

    Game of the Year (Geekery)

Do You Worship Cthulhu? A great little card based game where a group of players (the more the better) are split into cultists, villagers, investigators etc and must root out the taint of the Esoteric Order of Dagon before they are all sacrificed to Cthulhu. A game that allows easy modification hence the last game I played transforming into Do You Worship Chaos? with the playerse being split into Gangers, Inquisitors, Arbitrators and the like.

Great for parties, better when you're all drunk, but in that case whoevers running the game should have a notepad and pen just in case they forget whos who and who is dead :P.

Honorable Mentions : Spooks, Zombies, Munchkinthulhu

    Things Im Happy With

The preston munch and its continued popularity, especially with the first anniversary coming up.

Making many new friends this year, those of you who read this know who you are and I hope those that dont know I appreciate them greatly :)

    Robbi, nuff said :P

Seeing more bands live :) I need to see MORE this year, MORE I SAY!

The main DnD campaign. Ive more games in the offing for this year (possibly 3 new groups o.O phew) but this one has been running off and on for more than 4 years now. With a bit of luck it will have ended by February and have left a legacy of ridiculous encounters, dramatic battles and sugar highs in the minds of my friends and myself :) Its been fun.

    Things Im Unhappy With

Im still living at home, a situation which needs to change. I love my family but I want to get away from them, get more privacy and become more independant of them.

Still working at Borders, ive enjoyed it on and off but I really should move on to a better paying job with more regular hours.

My ill temperedness, especially round this time of year. I can be a grumpy so and so but sometimes I really should just slap myself around the face and tell myself to cheer up.

Hmmm more good than bad, I avoid Ammits jaws for another year. (A cookie to whoever gets that reference without having to look it up :P)

This Is About 2 Weeks Late, But Still...
The draft was still saved...Pretend this was posted 2 weeks ago :)

I dont think Ive ever seen a film with so much phallic imagery, testosterone, and pointy pointy nipplage. I got out of the cinema and felt like wrestling a bear, drinking some mead and then ravishing a whole village full of wenches.

I really should have to be honest.

All in all I had a pretty damn good weekend. Saturday I lurked around the house for most of the day, caught up on my painting and played some more God Hand. In the evening I pootled round to La's and watched the end of the first new Dr Who episode with her, Baz and a friend of hers before having a Bill Bailey/Anchorman based film night during which much popcorn and whisky was consumed.

Sunday I (being an idiot) went to work at 9:30, only to realise the rotas had changed and I really should be in bed...So back to bed for an hour or so I went. Afterwards I went out for Chris' leaving do and had a few drinks before making my way to Manchestermamama to watch Wrestlemania with the old college gang and James. GO TAKER.

Next day I headed back fairly early and met los geekos in Preston before (after heading home for a shower) going out for a meal with them. It was...interesting with many strange and wonderful topics being discussed as me and Char attempted to break peoples minds. In some cases we even succeeded (sorry Tomtom).

After the meal we went and watched the 300 and picked up Reb. See above for my opinion of said film.

Finally we adjourned to Simons house and watched a mixture of really bad porn and Ultimate Avengers as well as playing about a dozen games of 'Do You Worship Cthulhu?' which proved to be well worth buying. I really should organise more opportunities to play it, and think of more strange plots to work into it...

About 4am I got a lift home off Tom, and then I slept and slept and slept.

And the next day I went to work :(

    In Other News
I hear that one of Guillermo Del Toro (of Pans Labyrinth, Hellboy and Blade II fame)'s pet projects at the moment is a film version of At The Mountains of Madness by HP Lovecraft.

Now, I dont want to be crude but I believe this situation warrants it...

    *Creams Pants*

If he does it well (which to be honest I have no doubt he will) then it will be absolutely awesome. I wonder if he would consider doing a film version of The Burrowers Beneath, that would make a great little horror film.

    Incoming! Aiiee!
Looks like Ive got a fair few things coming in the next few weeks that can keep me busy. Going out with the work crowd tomorrow night for the first time in absolutely ages which could be fun depending on exactly how many people bother to turn up *Shakes fist menacingly in case any of them have tracked this thing down*.

Next sunday I shall be making my way to Manchester in order to watch Wrestlemania at the guys house *note to self, take a sleeping bag and things*, maybe in costume if we can be bothered. If thats the case I just need to get myself a hat and a black vest a'la the Undertaker.... yes I like professional wrestling, it amuses me :P. However I think it is Chris W's leaving do that night too so I shall have to at least go out and buy him a drink or three on the way to the station.

The following day I believe is me and my friends BIG MEAL(tm) which we have around easter time every year in order for us geeks to meet up, hang out, and maybe play some fun games. I shall see if anyone wants to run a mass one shot like the Call of Cthulhu one I did at Wintereenmass.

Still got to arrange a date with Baz and La to have a film/Bill Bailey night seeing as we have been pondering having one for a while. Also DnD night should be making a comeback now Kiro is back from Spain, so we can continue with our worldhopping campaign and maybe get in some 40K and Warmachine, though we will need to arrange a non-monday manchester visit before we can do the latter.

The next munch will be rolling around soon, though I think Im going to have to have a chat with Tara about changing the venue...damn football...t'is a foolish game.

Finally, and I realise this isnt coming up in the next few weeks, I have my ticket for Download. To which I shall be going with Charlotte, Colin, and many other people who I know are attending. Below I have summarised my opinions of the confirmed bands...

Flowers and Creme Eggs 1, Depression 0
My bad temper continued into last night (despite my attempts to deal with it via Godhand and Myst) and when I was awoken this morning at 7:30 ish by Nic (calling to ask for a lift as her poor old hips were giving way) it seemed that it would last for the rest of today too.

I was proven wrong when she arrived at my house as I was ambling downstairs to make a cup of tea and some toast, not only bringing her august self but also a lovely little bouquet of flowers (the evillest she could find apparently) and a creme egg :)

Flowers and sweeties for teh win!

Now I am home after another day of work (busybusybusy as usual) and sitting on my bed, I am also now ill :( I wasnt feeling wonderful yesterday but now...blergh.

    Not Even Ennui
Do you ever have one of those days where you've been fine all day, only to start getting rather grumpy and/or depressed as the day goes on? Odd arent they

Id much rather have a case of good old fashioned ennui, at least then I could gaze wistfully out of the window while sighing meaningfully to myself.

    Le sigh

Theres Something Wrong With My Mind...
There really is o.O I had the oddest dream that Ive had for some time last night, or at least the oddest that I actually remember. It was a sex-based dream (no surprises there) so the weak of constitution might want to beware :P.

Basically, I was having sex with one of my ex girlfriends. That part of the dream was wonderful ^_^ I regretted waking up and having to go to work as a result, the odd part however is that said girlfriend for some reason had exactly the same voice as Alan Davies and was reciting a standup routine o.O

    Like I said, odd.

    Preston Munch
I have just gotten in from my very first munch (if you dont know what one is ask me or google it :P) which, oddly enough, I helped to organise o.O. It went really well, especially considering I was expecting a handfull of people to turn up but was instead surprised by 40 or so meaning that the venue (the old black bull) was about half filled with a selection of random perverts and fetishists :D Awesome.

I met lots of interesting people had a few interesting conversations (did a bit of good old fashioned leering) and saw some interesting...marks ;) If Vicky (not Naylor) ever reads this she will know what I mean.

All in all, a good night, that I think will become a regular thing, especially considering how far some people were willing to travel to get to it (From blackpool in many cases). Not only that but few of the girls attending have convinced me to accompany them to Afterlife (a Preston fetish club) on saturday night which in and of itself should turn out to be an interesting night ;).

Anyway, to shower, and hence to sleep.

    Somebody...Eat My Brains...
Ugh...hangovers suck. I normally dont get the damn things as I either stay awake until Im reasonably sober or sleep through it. But as I slept for about 12 hours yesterday, waking up about 2, and fell asleep about 1 last night Ive only had about 6 hours to get a ridiculous amount of alchohol out of my system.

    Ugh....

At least I have the curealls now though, a bowl of wheatabix and a massive cup of tea. I think theres something about being full of booze that makes cups of tea almost orgasmically good. Its awesome...and I want more tea...

As for WHY Im hungover it was the work christmas party last night and we booked the top floor of revolution. Everyone had vast amounts of boozeafrols, did a bit of dancing (even me!), and fell over a lot. Though I didnt fall over until I got home.

: A note for Tom : When you messaged me last night I was likely in bed, I didnt realise Id left the laptop on when I crawled into bed...for that matter I dont even remember getting to bed o.o :

So now I am awake and my mood and physical state are improving thanks to the brown brew. What should I do today...
